Gig Promotion on the WWW
Because of natural 'hit and miss' system of the WWW, promoting your music performances on the web is likely one of the less succesful sides of the internet. Given that most gigs are only organised a few weeks, if that, in advance, letting alot of people know of those gigs is a matter of chance as to whether they first find your site, and they happen to be in the area of the gig.
Having said that, the Internet IS good for letting your select circle know about your upcoming performances. People who regularly visit your site for that information can access what you would find difficult telling them otherwise. Certainly saves a few phone calls and flyers.
Successful Marketing in any business venture starts with, 1, knowing exactly what it is you NEED to tell people to get them interested in your product and 2, knowing the weaknesses of and opposition to your efforts.
Therefore, knowing the above 'weakness' about the Internet will make us think differently when it comes to 'selling' our gigs.
There are some very good forums on the Internet, online groups and networks where your circle of 'friends' grows automatically simply because you all belong to, and read about, what's going on within the group. At a recent music conference a question was asked, 'how do you get noticed on the Internet?'
The answer from a very succesful musician was 'network, network, network, and oh, in case I forgot, network'.
So these groups are helpful to us when we are trying to tell a 'select market', that is those who may be interested in going to a music performance, when and where our gigs are on.
Here then are a couple of the more recent groups that are more music associated and helpful to our gig promotions.

Music Forte; where EVERY artist has a chance of being heard.
Music Forte is the "real deal" for musicians and music listeners alike. With a real emphasis on just 'being heard as a musician', any suitable recording can be loaded onto the site for all to hear. Each artist is encouraged to list at least three full songs for listening and downloading and so there are artists with simple home and amateur recordings with a chance of being heard right around the globe.
You can join for free; as a musician it means being able to upload your songs and promotional material but restricted beyond that, and as a listener you can listen but not download. However join as a Platinum Member and the full Music Forte site is yours to benefit from. Music lessons, forums, sell your cds, promote your gigs, offer your music services from playing and recording to management and promotional.

My Space is a more social oriented site but with a strong music aspect. You can load songs or song samples for others to listen to and promote your cds, gigs or website there.
This great site offers an array of project 'Action Planners', including some very good ones for musicians.
Written by an Actor / Musician so he knows what it's all about, and has succeeded from his own 'Action Plan'.
