Networking The Online Music Community Music Community Forums You will notice the 'music industry' contacts are listed last. That is NOT because they are the least important, only that they are the last that we should try and 'crack'. All the major labels no longer allow direct soliciting from just any artist. They ALL now expect anyone with serious potential to have an agent or manager. Their draconian and self-protective style may have always inhibited a lot of good talent before now, but it no longer needs to hold someone back completely. As the old saying goes, 'there's more than one way to kill a cat'. Is that polically incorrect?? Sorry if I offend anyone. MUSIC COMMUNITY FORUMSMost online music 'shops' like CD BAby have forums where people can give their opinions on the music itself or just on anything musical. They are a good source of information and picking the right forum can give you the opportunity to promote your music or service. Here are some sites that are strictly for music listeners. Music Forte - your business in the music business. SOCIAL FORUMSHere are some sites that are more social based forums. My Space - A recent addition that has a strong musical influence. MUSIC INDUSTRY CONTACTSWith the options afforded by the Internet and modern technology there are a number of 'small time' record 'companies' who propose to 'get your great music' into the entertainment industry. They will charge you a fee for approaching the industry on your behalf and may even 'guarantee' you success. However, the 'guarantee' is really worthless, as NOTHING can be guaranteed in this industry. For example,if an 'agent' has demonstrated an active involvement in your project with effort on his part to show his belief in your product, he may want a fee for specific work to be done or costs to be met. That is totally reasonable, you would not expect someone to put out effort and expense for you without some compensation. However make sure all is done with your knowledge, that there is proof and record of what has been done, and most importantly, get everything down in writing beforehand as to what is expected to be done. You do not want someone spending money you do not have. This is simply GOOD BUSINESS PRACTISE. Do not however, also take something in writing as a guarantee of success or commitment, it is simply a means of understanding what is expected on each persons part.
