A number of products come with a 'free' version. The idea is to get you used to using the product with the intention of getting you to 'upgrade' to a 'professional' version of it. The 'demo' though is totally usable with limitations only as to how much you can do with it.

On the other hand, some companies provide 'trial' versions of their programs for appraisel. The difference between a 'free program', even a demo version, and a 'trial program' is that the trial does not give a finished product, or is on a time constraint, and often both.

So some 'trial programs' may restict you in saving a document, or may give you a limited number of 'saves' or a limited number of days to use the product before the program 'closes down' until registered and paid for.

FINALE

Finale 2006 demo is available for both Macintosh and Windows platforms.

Differences between the Demo and Full version:

The Allegro, PrintMusic! and Finale SongWriter demos are available for both Macintosh OS X and Windows platforms.

SIBELIUS

You can download a demo version of Sibelius 4 from www.sibelius.com, or order a free information pack including a brochure and demo CD-ROM.

Restrictions of the demo version. This demo version is identical to the full Sibelius program,except that:

     •   saving,exporting and Internet publishing are disabled
     •   you cannot submit your music for publication on SibeliusMusic.com or SibeliusEducation.com
     •   you can only print a single page (which is watermarked)

Music Recording Trial Programs

PRO-TOOLS

If you are looking for a FREE recording program, you can't go past the Pro-Tools Free program. Its called Pto-Tools Free because it's just that, it's FREE and it's NOT a 'trial' version.
The only disadvantages are that it is simply NOT a full studio product, it is restricted to 8, yes that is right, 8 audio channels. You'd have to be a professional studio to want more than that.
Other shortages include power, it sometimes falls short when doing crucial things like burning to cd, but hey it's FREE and it otherwise works 'perfectly'.

XARA

Xara is a company which provides affordable but first class web building and graphics programs like Menu-Maker, WebStyle, and their main product Xara X, the latest version being called Xara Xtreme.

At www.xara.com you can download 15 day trial programs of all their products, and if you are thinking of developing your own site it is REALLY worth looking at them. You may even get what you need made in the trial period, however there would be some dis-advantages. Like you would not be able to make any changes to the finished articles unless you actually bought the product.
They ARE very affordable though.
