How to Build Your Site to Attract

There are some basics about building websites and promoting them that will go a long way in getting your site noticed.

The problem with websites is that you have to 'advertise you advertising.

When you put an advert in a local paper the paper does the work of circulating your ad. However once you have put your 'advertising' on the Internet, you THEN have to go out and advertise IT.

Use html to build your site

The first thing when planning your website is how to actually put it together. Using a web building program like FrontPage or DreamWeaver may seem the easiest way to do so, however the search engines will take little notice of your site. WHY?

When using a program to build your site, the program puts the code together. Now computers are pretty smart things, however they also do things the hard way. If you compare the code from a program built site to that of a HTML built site, you will notice that the former is a lot more intense and complicated.

One of the main reasons websites will get noticed by Search Engines is by links from and especially to the site. The latter is a matter of you networking to get other sites interested in putting a link on their site to yours. Nonetheless there are still principles about building YOUR site that will help as well.

Try to put as many informative, or key, words and phrases on your front pages as possible, without cluttering them. Not just the Home Page but the pages within one click of the Home Page. When we say 'informative' we don't mean to put as much 'information' on the pages, just information that means something.

Use plain HTML language for your main links, Search Engine 'spiders' can read the 'HREF' designation of HTML but do not easily follow JavaScript language. So avoid opening new pages with JavaScript. This may mean loss of flashy graphic openings, but it will ensure more people actually SEE the pages.

Here are some sites that will discuss this topic a bit, actually, a lot, more. Some are paid services, but much is free.

Who to Submit Your Web Pages To

There are a number of advertising agencies who offer to submit your pages to tho 'top 500' search engines for a fee.

ONE WORD:- FORGETIT

If you read through the information from the above Search Engine support sites the one thing you learn is to go to the 'MOST INFLUENTIAL'. Now obviously the most popular would be among those ones, so the 6 or 7 most popular Search Engines are worth 'submitting to'. However there are a couple of companies that act as databases, even for the 'big 2', and though these may not be household names, they are still the ones to submit to first.

Here are the sites that are the prime Search Engines
Google; The most popular though personally I find that often do not return as many results.www.google.com
Yahoo; More results, however more cluttered. But if you look through the first ten or so pages of both Search Engines results, (Google and Yahoo) Yahoo DOES throw up more relevent websites.www.yahoo.com
LookSmart Search Family; "The main advantage of listing with Looksmart stems from the fact that MSN use their data prominently within results for searches conducted on MSN.com, MSN.co.uk and other international MSN's. If you're a non commercial site get into looksmart." (courtesy of www.inn-business.com)www.zeal.com
Open Directory Project; if your listed on dmoz.org you will soon notice your site is being found on sites such as the Google Directory, AOL search, Netscape Search and Lycos to name just a few.www.dmoz.org
All The Web; fast becoming popular, make sure keywords are located between 'h1' and 'h2' HTML tags.www.alltheweb.com
MSN; is linked to the MSN network and hence gets a lot of use by MSN subscribers.http://www.msn.com
AOL; like MSN it is linked to the AOL network and hence gets a lot of use by AOL subscribers.www.aolsearch.com
Alta Vista; one of the early front runners that still draws a crowd.www.altavista.com
Lycos; like Alta Vista one of the early front runners and still very popular.www.lycos.com
Overture; popular among business sites.www.overture.com
